Sink My Ship - Online Battleship

Remember the old board game, Battleship, where you call out the coordinates/numbers and hope you hit your opoonents battleship? Well Sink My Ship is an online version of that, where you can play against others via your web browser. It includes a chat room so you can talk with others while waiting to join a game, or create your own game.

Bang! Howdy Open Beta

Now open to the public is the beta version of Bang! Howdy, a hybrid turn-based and real-time strategy game set in the Wild West. Bang! Howdy is a free game that you can play online, however you can purchase microcurrency for upgrades in the game, so the super-rich can have a sizable advantage on you if they so desire. This is part of an early trend of play-free-buy-upgrades type of games that we’ll be seeing more of this year.

“We’re happier than a coyote in the chuckwagon to let y’all know what we’ve been working on back at the ranch,” said Michael Bayne, project lead for Bang! and Three Rings’ CTO. “We think strategy fans will appreciate our fresh perspective on the genre and plumb everybody will enjoy our fun and accessible Wild West antics.”

A Force More Powerful

There’s nothing more frightening than a game within a niche, and worse yet a niche game within a niche. That’s exactly what A Force More Powerful: The Game is. It is a geopolitical simulator (think Republic: The Revolution), based on the documentary film of the same name, and one that looks to push all the right buttons. That is a rarity for this genre of games. Adam over at Gamers with Job writes about the game, and Bill over at Dubious Quality pipes in as well with his thoughts. Finally a game where non-violence is a viable method of achieving goals.

Heroes of Might & Magic V Gold

Ubisoft has announced that Heroes of Might & Magic V has gone gold. The game should be available on retail store shelves sometimes next month.

Heroes of Might & Magic V Preview

Total Video Games has a preview of the turn-based strategy game, Heroes of Might & Magic V. After a rocky beginning with 3DO and then with Ubisoft, and a dismal beta period, HoMMV looks to finally bring the classic series to gamers on May 19th. Here is a bit from the preview:

HoMMV will be the first instalment in the series to be full 3D, with scalability that allows players to zoom right into the heart of the action. For many RTS veterans, or many gamers in general, such an addition may not seem like that much of an advancement in the genre as a whole, and to an extent that is the case. However, the move is a significant step in terms of the franchise, which experienced a similar ‘leap’ in the last full instalment from 3DO in the form of fixed view isometric 3D environments back in 2002.

Ubisoft Having Second Thoughts on Starforce?

The Ubisoft forums has an employee stating that their upcoming turn-based strategy game, Heroes of Might & Magic 5, will not feature Starforce’s product in the game. At their French forums, they indicate that they will not use Starforce for future titles either.

With the negative publicity not only from gamers, but from the industry (Computer Gaming World published an article in this month’s issue that didn’t put Starforce in a positive light), it seems it has reached the beancounters at Ubisoft. Whether or not the above statements are true remains to be seen.

Update: The French statement is translated as, “It’s been decided that the anti-copy protection software used for the upcoming Ubisoft games will not be Starforce.”

Galactic Civilization 2 Demo

Another demo, this one from Stardock letting you try out their space-based turn-based strategy game, Galactic Civilization 2: Dread Lords. The demo comes in at 130MB, and allows you to play as the human race, weapons unlocked, 3 year turn limit. It does not feature the campaign mode, no metaverse, and no tutorials. Although, with a game as complex as this, I think leaving out any tutorials is a mistake.

I have to hand it to Stardock, they truly know how to run a website about their game. It features a beginner’s guide, a wiki with tons and tons of information, constant updates, and the fact that there’s no copy protection means they know what it takes to move into the future of PC gaming.
