Starforce and Copy Protection

There was a story on the front page of Digg.com alleging that Stardock, creators of Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords, supported anyone pirating their game. Recently, the controversial company that develops the Starforce copy protection technology posted a public torrent link in their forums to download Galactic Civilization 2: Dread Lords for free. They were effectively going against what their company is trying to accomplish — defeat game piracy.

Some say they did this to promote their product, some say they did it out of spite that Stardock is going against their philosophy, and so on. Stardock posted that they do not support piracy at all, and said the story on Digg is wrong.

Digg is reporting that a website is implying that we want Galactic Civilizations II to be pirated. Absolutely not! Of course we DO NOT want our game to be pirated. We’re a small company, every lost sale hurts us.

This only adds fuel to the fire for Starforce, which has developed a bad reputation for being too aggressive and causing problems with computers in which it steathily installs itself on when you install a game that uses their technology. There’s even a website called Boycott Starforce, which lists all the games that uses the copy protection.

Interview With MadDoc And Bethesda About ‘Star Trek: Legacy’

StarTrekGamers interviews Dr. Ian Lane Davis of MadDoc Software and Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks about their upcoming latest installment to the Star Trek franchise:

Let me take a moment to clear up the confusion on Legacy, because it really is not a full out RTS, rather – it’s a hybrid. You see, Star Trek: Legacy is the Star Trek game I’ve always wanted to make: the best possible gaming representation of Trek fleet combat.

Legacy is part squad shooter, part action game, part strategy game…and it’s all Trek combat all the time.

In Legacy, we feel players should become strongly attached to their ships – they’re not cannon fodder. During missions, players will earn command points which can be used to upgrade their ships between missions.

Stronghold Legends Announced

Firefly Studios and Take Two Interactive announces Stronghold Legend, the castle-building-then-protecting real-time strategy game. In previous installment of the series, you fought Arabians and men who resemble rats and wolves, but in Legends, you play either as King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, Count Vlad Dracul or relive the heroic sagas of the mighty Siegfried of Germany. No, Roy and lions aren’t in this version. Stronghold Legends is expected to be on store shelves this fall.

I’ve played the original Stronghold and its expansion to death, but really didn’t like Stronghold 2. I’m a bit apprehensive how Legends will turn out, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and hope it turns out to be addictive fun like the original was.
