Gold Farmers Step Up to Fill the Peons4hire Void

WoW Gnomes Rain Down to their Death for Gold Farm AdvertisingLess than a week after Blizzards successful settlement barring Peons4hire permanently from conducting their business we’ve received the following email from a competing RMT company offering the Dungeonrun.com staff a killer deal on cheap WoW gold!

Peons4hire company statement

Dear User, as the Blizzard litigation, we will have to temporarily close their
peons4hire websites, please go to [URL Removed] buy wow gold! Very cheap wow gold!

Thank you for your peons4hire support!

It’s reassuring to know there’s still industrious little entrepreneurs out there not detoured by the American courts in their quest to provide lazy gamers with all their MMO gold needs.

Vivendi and Activision to merge, Guitar Hero MMO next?

    Activision Blizzard

Vivendi and Activision have struck a $18.9 Billion deal to merge as Activision Blizzard. The combined company will nearly equal Electronic Arts in size, and combine disparate franchises such as Guitar Hero and WoW under the same corporate entity.

As for the details the press release it’s pretty dry material for the express purpose of making stockholders see lots of dollar signs. Plus given Blizzard’s value in this deal, it clearly has them calling the shots and terms in the merger allowing them to remain an independent division. Nor can investors ignore the obvious synergies in both companies given that Southpark created a show for each companies top games, World of Warcraft, and Guitar Hero, with outside confirmation like that, you can’t go wrong.

That and there’s going to be a lot of executives at both companies patting themselves on the backs over this one given the million dollar plus bonuses they’ll likely be recieving once the merger is approved.

    From Blizzard.com
Blizzard to Join Forces With Activision
We’re pleased to announce that along with the other companies that make up Vivendi Games, we are merging with Activision to form a new global entertainment organization called Activision Blizzard (pending shareholder and regulatory approval). Similar to our previous arrangement, Blizzard Entertainment will now operate as a division of this new organization.

There will be no changes to our games, our websites, our personnel, or our day-to-day operations as a result of the deal. However, this combining of resources will benefit all of the companies involved and will further strengthen Blizzard’s ability to continue delivering high-quality content for our players around the world for many years to come. To learn more about this exciting new development, please read our

If anything the team at Blizzard deserves a congratulations for their tremendous ride over the last several years and totally unexpected success with World of Warcraft, something that was likely the sole reason this deal was possible.

As for a Guitar Hero MMO? Stranger things have happened…

Just In: University Studies Waste Just as Much Time & Money as MMO’s

Mom! Hotpockets NOW!!!After months of intense research a Syracuse University Study has come to the conclusion that MMO’s do more damage to gamers health and responsibilities but also provided a much rewarding experience compared to other forms of gaming.

    DUH.

How did they come to this amazing conclusion? They took a batch of 100 students splitting them into 4 groups playing outdated and largely irrevelant games in todays market.

The first group of 25 were given tokens to spend at a local arcade, most likely wiping out their entire allowance during the study within days…

The second group played Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the PS2 (Metacritic Rating, 73).

The third group got to play Diablo II on PC, but apparently never played on or became Bnet addicts.

The final fourth group of ill-fated subjects played the MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot. (One has to wonder how different would the results have been if they were forced to play the original EQ or Star Wars Galaxies?)

The study had the following to say on the results of the MMO gamers:

After a month, the MMORPG players — the fourth group — reported playing on average 14.4 hours in the previous week, more than twice as much as the next most avid players, the “Diablo II” group.

The “Dark Age of Camelot” players also reported significantly lower overall health and poorer sleep and were more likely to find the games interfered with their studies and social lives.

On the other hand, they had more fun playing and were more likely to say they had made new friends, presumably online.

So there you have it, proof that studies waste just as much time and money proving the obvious, but we didn’t need a study for that did we?

Tories Consider Ban on Violent Games

David CameronTough news for our friends across the pond. Conservative Party leader David Cameron (Tony Blair 2.0?) is due to unveil a manifesto shortly which will include dealing with violent videogames as a part of his approach to dealing with Britain’s crime crisis.

Cameron had the following to say on the subject to the BBC:

“We are never going to deal with crime unless we look at the broader context and say ‘Yes, tough laws, strong action on police, but also action to strengthen our society.’”

“Videos accessible to young people which show extreme and callous violence would also be targeted to prevent the “coarsening effect on the ethical sensibility of young people”

“And that includes, I think, videogames and things like that where we do need to think of the context in which people are growing up.”

“Violent video games should be curbed, parents urged to be more responsible, and schools should be reformed”

    Future Tories?

Mr Cameron described Labour’s approach to crime as “one-dimensional”, instead of focussing on “broader” issues like… “Other options included prison ships and putting disused army camps into use as jails.”. You’ll definately need the extra room for all those violent sociopathic videogamers roaming the street buzzed out of their minds on Bawls and Mountain Dew after marathon FPS and MMO gaming sessions.

V for VendettaThe Conservatives say “long-term generational change” is needed to fight crime - not a “knee-jerk” response. Surely by it not being a knee-jerk response they’re fully prepared to present scientific evidence to backup their claims of the coarsening effect of video games and media causing rampant crime to sweep through Britain? Or perhaps they should take a look back on their other uneducated and inspired policies such as the ban on guns that caused a gun related crime to double.

AWOMO - 3D Virtual World Meets Digital Distribution

A World of My Own has just announced the start of their beta test with over 20,000 users signed up.

GDI announces beginning of AWOMO Beta Test and hits the 20,000 registrant mark

More details announced on updated website for full Beta over 70 Free Games now signed for test phase

London, UK, 16th August 2007: Game Domain International Ltd (GDI), a company providing services to deliver games online using proprietary super-fast digital distribution technology, today announced it has now passed the 20,000 registrant mark for the AWOMO Beta Test program, coinciding with an extensive revamp of its website.

AWOMO is a game distribution system similar to Steam wrapped around a candy coated shell of virtual 3D world goodness that lets you meet and socialize with other players while downloading your latest game purchase.

A World of My Own - Downtown BarWe can only think of the possibilities of griefing and annoying people while waiting on your streamed game to finish, or listening to all avatars asking, “can u spare $2 Payal so I can buy Cocoto Kart Racer?! Plzzz!”.

Game vendors are organized in various themed districts named Downtown, Takana, Olympia, Deepwalker, and The Village. If you’re looking for the Red Light district you’re probably better off staying in Second Life, no naughty titles or titillation here, yet (just give the AWOMO community a bit of time to fill in the demand for those services).

A number of major gaming companies have already signed on such as 2K Sports, Atari, Codemasters, Eidos, Empire Interactive, THQ, Vivendi, Sega, Strategy First, and NCSoft.

Initial games available during the beta test include City of Heroes, City of Villains, Company of Heroes, Civilization III, Fear, Hitman, Jus Cause, and about 30 other shovelware titles that’ll truly test the idea of Long tail theory.

At best it’s just a PC version of the announced Sony PS3 HOME service with even poorer graphics. At worst it’s yet another layer of complexity and inefficiency added to buying a game online that’s already been solved so well by existing services with established track records.

The parent company has stated users will be able to purchase games without entering the 3D world of AWOMO, which we can only point out as further proof of how extraneous the 3D client is to the experience of buying a game. Will the service be a success? It’s this authors opinion that future services giving users a sense of ownership in the virtual world with their own properties vs. the virtual mall districts of AWOMO are much more likely to interest online gamers, yet could still suffer from trying to fill a niche where there’s no demand.

There’s only 10,000 beta slots remaining so if you want to check it out, hit their registration page. I’d also recommend using a non-Microsoft IE browser such as FireFox, their site seems to lack IE6 support. more >>>

SOE Announces The Agency for PC & PS3

    The Agency Logo

Last week we learned of this title being confirmed as a PS3 title, as of today it’s also been announced for the PC as well in Sony’s recent Press Announcement outlined below.

Sony Online EntertainmentThe Agency is a pick-up-and-play experience where players assume the role of elite agents in a modern-day world. Both solo players and groups will enjoy a wide variety of cooperative and competitive story-driven missions set in exotic locales across the globe

The Agency is a fast-paced, online persistent shooter in a contemporary setting of bullets, bomb blasts, and betrayal. Live the life of an elite agent in a world of super spies and rugged mercenaries, who use both the highest technology and the lowest tactics to achieve their goals. Featuring cooperative and competitive play, The Agency is designed to provide instant action and long-term strategy for all fans of espionage, deception, and explosive gameplay.

Hopefully this means an action packed online shooter borrowing slightly from games such as NCSoft’s City of Heroes. Currently its unclear whether this game will truly be a MMO title with any large dynamic areas to explore or interact in that aren’t instanced away from fellow players. If it simply turns out to be a multiplayer spy/espionage game with a pricey monthly suscription fee we’re predicting yet another dog of a game for SOE.

Lower... A bit to the left now please... Mmm.

Persistent character development allows players to supplement their gear with exotic and powerful skills that make them feel like the elite agents they’ve always dreamt of becoming. Additionally, in lieu of the typical class systems in many other games, The Agency’s approach is simply, “You Are What You Wear.” Players will customize their character’s attire based on the mission at hand, emphasizing combat, support, stealth, or even cover identities.

Players begin their experience by choosing to be a slick UNITE spy or a gritty ParaGON mercenary. Both factions will have players tangling in illicit activities such as drug smuggling, assassinations, espionage and counter intelligence. As they gain ranks within their chosen agency, players will increase their influence over the world while experiencing a deep story of action and intrigue. Along the way players will be able to build their own agencies, team with others to create joint agencies, and recruit a roster of useful Operatives.

Operatives are “living loot” characters that wait in the wings for orders to build that new sports car, gather intel for the next mission, or provide that satellite scan to expose the enemy. As players advance through the game, they will collect more powerful Operatives that will better assist them with missions. Players can use their roster to help themselves or their team and even trade Operatives with other players.

Hundreds of exceptional missions will be offered in The Agency. Gamers will also be able to begin building their own Agencies. One of the interesting features of the game is the inclusion of Operatives. They are collectible non-player characters who present the goods player’s desire, the services to keep them alive, and let them concentrate on the mission at hand. Operatives work 24/7, regardless of whether players are logged in, and they can even keep them up-to-date through email and instant messages. Gamers can relax from their high-flying career to engage in a number of supplementary activities

    The Agency Screenshot

Our goal is to break from traditional online games and provide players with a ‘fun now, no waiting’ gameplay experience in a dynamic, ever-evolving online world.

It’s almost like Deja Vu, where have we heard that before?

    Blizzcon Attendee’s Get Beta Key

BlizzCon MurlocAs if you didn’t have enough reason to dress up in your Warlock or Murloc suit to attend BlizzCon on August 3rd and 4th at Los Angeles, CA… Blizzard has announced they will be giving out free Beta Keys along with other swag.

The key will be valid for “an upcoming blizzard game”, with Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 being very likely candidates.

No wait! That’s not all! You will also recieve your very own keycode to give one WoW character the very Murloc suit pictured above. Perfect for boring guild meetings, a night on the town standing at the bridge in IF, or the 8th try in your Raid with 6% of your armor left and another wipe looking pretty likely.

Sony Sacrifices Goat for God of War II Game Launch

*Leaked* Sony God of War 2 Billboard Preview - Source: GameStop IndiaLast month Sony used a decapitated goat as the centerpiece of a party it threw in Greece to promote the launch of Playstation 2 title “God of War II”.

Also present at the party was theatrical performers, such as topless women feeding grapes to partygoers. All of this was supposed to be in keeping with the video game’s Greek Mythology theme.

According to media reports in Europe, the animal rights groups were enraged over the dead goats exploitation. As for the topless human females.. they had no issues.

Accusations of butchering a goat to prop up a video game launch party couldn’t have come at a worse time for the company. Sure, their PS3 launch wasn’t that hot, they’ve had virtually zero decent titles available since release, and they’re getting hit with DRM complaints left and right. Why NOT hack off a goat head and put its body on display? We’re talking brilliant marketing minds at work here.

As for Sony’s reponse to the accusations:

Sony has launched an internal investigation, the company said in a statement.

“The goat was returned to the butcher,” Sony said. “On this occasion we recognize that we fell short of our normal high standards of conduct.”

They also deemed it necessary to issue a recall of over 80,000 copies of the Official Sony Playstation Magazine which featured the event in its full color glossy print glory.

I must admit, as deplorable as Sony’s conduct has been, the DR staff is a bit disapointed we weren’t invited to the party in Greece, especially given the lack of information on any theatrical performances of the sex-mini game(s)? present in GoW II. DR Signing off…

Reasons to be a PC Gamer in 2007

There’s a thread in the Gamespot forums with a list of games that we can look forward to playing in 2007. While 2006 is far from over (thread for 2006 games here), it’s nice to have something to look forward to. It looks like a lot of RPG’s are slated, and there’s even a promising space simulator to look forward to (we need more space sims!) PC gaming is far from dying, as some pundits like to claim every year.

    Uwe Boll Sues Distributor

Romar Entertainment, was gracious enough to not let too many people suffer through the movie that is based on the vampire game of the same name, Bloodrayne. Uwe Boll who directed and produced the flick, is not happy, and is suing the distributor for not showing the “movie” on 2000 screens like they promised, but rather 930 of them. Romar Entertainment grew claws after this announcement:

Romar co-founder James Schramm is having none of it though - in fact, he’s announced plans to launch a lawsuit against Boll in return. Speaking to Gamespot, Schramm said that when it came to the DVD release of the film, Boll deleted the Romar name and logo from the box packaging, trailer and end credits.

He also alleges that Boll refused to pay Romar 1 per cent of the proceeds from the DVD sales, refused to let film critics see advanced screenings of the movie, and refused to arrange for the cast members to attend press events.

    The Escapist on Blizzard Entertainment

The Escapist has a series of articles about Blizzard Entertainment, the games they’ve made (World of Warcraft, Starcraft, etc.) and how they have changed the face of gaming in a cut-throat industry that is rapidly growing.

Despite reports of churn in the ranks of World of Warcraft players, the total number of subscribers continues to rise. What the dramatic upward swoop says to me is folks are entering the massive genre and not leaving. While some may quit World of Warcraft and no longer play online games, Woodcock’s chart suggests that there are a number of players who enter the massive space and, upon canceling their WoW account, move on to another title in the genre.

    Infinium Labs to Change Name

When a company’s name is dragged through the mud, whether of their own volition or not, a prudent course of action seems to be to change their name. This is exactly what Infinium Labs is doing, after years of vaporware that was the much hyped and maligned Phantom gaming console that became the brunt of the gaming industry. It could also be the ongoing SEC investigation into their company practices.

This is probably what StarForce will do at some point, hoping to slip under the radar to market their aggressive anti-piracy copy protection technology under another name. StarForce has suffered a couple of major blows lately, with both Ubisoft and now CDV dropping support.

Windows XP won’t get DirectX 10

ATI, in a recent meeting in London, mentioned that Microsoft won’t release a version of DirectX 10 for Windows XP, instead making it an exclusive Vista feature. This is likely to encourage gamers to upgrade when Vista is made available sometimes in 2007.

This decision has raised the ire of some gamers who feel they shouldn’t have to upgrade their operating system to play a game. EVE Online announced that they will upgrade their popular space MMORPG’s graphic engine to include DirectX 10 features, and Halo 2 will be a Vista-only title.

During a DirectX 10-related event in London, UK, Richard Huddy, ATI Technologies’ software developers relations chief, said that Microsoft’s Vista will integrate DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 APIs for different types of hardware, but the current Windows XP will not get DirectX 10 support, as suggested some rumours earlier. For end users this means that to get the most advantages of the new-generation graphics processing units (GPUs), the new OS will be required.

    CDV Drops StarForce, Too

A while back, we reported that Ubisoft dropped the anti-piracy protection software, StarForce, due to the flood of angry consumers with legitimate copies being affected right alongside those who were trying to pirate the games. Now it looks like the next major player utilizing StarForce, CDV, plans on dropping their licensing of StarForce as well. Citing the reason as being consumer demand, CDV had this to say about the new copy protection scheme that they will be using:

“We believe that TAGES will provide a sensible balance between protecting CDV’s intellectual property rights against piracy, while at the same time minimizing the restrictions experienced by legitimate owners of our products,” explained CDV’s Chief Technology Officer, Teut Weidemann.
