Mythos Beta Gameplay Video

First impressions of Mythos include a distinct graphical inspiration from WoW, dungeon crawling action reminiscent of Gauntlet Dungeons, and Diablo 1 & 2 gameplay.

It looks fun, but isn’t their target market more likely to just buy Diablo 3 when Blizzard gets around to putting it out?

Update: We have confirmed that Mythos will only feature non-gameplay impacting micro-transactions (devs have stated that with enough time purchased items can be had for free by just playing the game, and any other purchases would be purely cosmetic), and there will be no monthly subscription fee or cost to download.

  1. Well, this is just my opinion.

It doesn’t look like it’s doing anything amazing yet, but it beats the pants off of anything out like it right now.

Dungeon Runners utterly fails to have the feel of a good, top down action RPG that Diablo so finely did. Now that we all identify with Diablo as the cornerstone of that genre, it’s natural that we expect a similar feel to get a satisfying experience.

This game just looks like it has feel and personality. The controls seem responsive and tight. I guess tile will tell, but I’m excited now.. and I wasnt’ before I watched this vid.

  2. Worth noting is also that this will be entirely free to have and to play, with optional purchaseable items that Flagship maintains will peak interest of players but not sway the tides in favor of those who want to spend money. Things like cosmetic items, from what I’ve been told.

I’m in the beta myself, NDA is lifted, and I can surely tell you that it’s WAAAAAY better than Dungeon Runners, and probably the 1st free-MMO I’ve played that doesn’t suck.

It being akin to Diablo or WoW should come as no surprise. It’s being helmed by a studio full of ex-blizzard employees.

It’s good, very good, for such an early beta. I can’t wait to see more.

  3. I don’t see anywhere in this video of Mythos being “way better” than Dungeon Runners. In order for something to be “way better”, the gameplay itself has to be a lot more fun. I didn’t see where all that fun is coming from. The combat is slow, you are never attacked by more than 2 or 3 creatures, and I saw nothing fun or funny about the game.

How is this game “way better” than Dungeon Runners? I’m not seeing it.

  4. How about a little context you can discover in about fifteen seconds by clicking maybe three links and reading? This isn’t just made by a bunch of ex-Blizzard employees. The Flagship Studios guys (Hellgate: London) *are* the guys behind Diablo 2, so any similarity obviously arises from that. That being said, don’t forget that this game was never intended to be a product, just a technology test for them, but it turned out fun and they decided to roll with it. So all this analysis is moot. Yes, it’s just like a mix of D2 and WoW cause these are the guys who did that stuff, and yes it’s fun. And, imo, yes, D3 will be huger.

  5. The proof is in the pudding.

It’s sort of how, you can play Diablo 2 and Titan Quest, which are essentially the same game, but still find one more fun than the other.

The action, general hack and slashing, and scenery as well as classes, are done far more interestingly than in DR.

DR, for all its humor and wit, is boring to play.

One thing for me that makes a hack and slash title stand out, is the feeback you get from hacking and slashing. In DR, I felt no thrill in fighting the enemy, but in this very early build of Mythos, I do. I get a the fun of Diablo 2 when I’m in a dungeon, crawling my way through mobs.

  6. Even as this is a technology testbed for them, based on all your guys feedback, how can Dungeon Runners can compete if they stick to their guns with the $5/subscription for a premium account that’s doesn’t offer anything more than the free Mythos? Doesn’t even sound like the free DR experience will stack up that well against Mythos either, I know I wasn’t impressed with DR.

  7. That’s just it, Scott. I can’t. DR will sort of fade away I think, overshadowed by Mythos and eventually Hellgate as the place to be for online HnS.

Stephen and the rest of the small group did an admirable job and injecting life into an RTS engine they were tossed and told to “Make something we can test a different transaction model with”.

But ultimately, it’s gameplay and features will be far eclipsed by Mythos. And it’ll cease to matter, ultimately, what they charge.

  8. I’d like to make a disclaimer. I’m not trying to put anyone on the defensive. I just want to understand everyone’s point.

“The Flagship Studios guys (Hellgate: London) *are* the guys behind Diablo 2″

I think there are a lot of people who claim that they were the guys behind the diablo series:
    http://www.castawayentertainment.com/about.html
    http://www.arena.net/team.php

Maybe it was a big team, but I don’t know who was actually responsible for making the sure the game was all people say it was when it came out. I played it in 2005, so it didn’t capture me the same as it did others.

In my mind, Mythos is synonymous with Fate.
    http://mmocodex.com/blog/?p=6760

I have not played Mythos yet. I only have this gameplay video posted here to go by. To me, it looks like Fate. I played fate for a long while, but I don’t think it is as good as Dungeon Runners or Titan Quest.

“One thing for me that makes a hack and slash title stand out, is the feeback you get from hacking and slashing. ”
In this video, mostly what I see are repetitive gunshots with monsters attacking 1 or 2 at a time and then falling down dead.

    What feedback is there?

“In DR, I felt no thrill in fighting the enemy, but in this very early build of Mythos, I do. I get a the fun of Diablo 2 when I’m in a dungeon, crawling my way through mobs.”

At this moment, I don’t feel that much of a thrill in DR either, but I at least get to use multiple abilities that make it feel more engaging. In this video, I don’t see that.

“The action, general hack and slashing, and scenery as well as classes, are done far more interestingly than in DR.”

I am going based on this video. The dungeon didn’t look that interesting to me. The graphics look like FATE and I’m not a big fan of the shiny, glowing, soft lighted world.

There aren’t any class restrictions in DR. I like that for my style of gameplay. DR is lacking skills at the moment, but I believe once there are more skills it will be more fun to play a classless play as you want game as opposed to play in this cookie cutter class we have carved out for you.

What are you getting in this game for free that makes it better than the 5$ fee in Dungeon Runners?

    Mike Arfken on 07 29th, 2007

  9. “What are you getting in this game for free that makes it better than the 5$ fee in Dungeon Runners?”

    Fun.

You haven’t played Mythos, and even when you do, you still may choose DR over it, paying your 5 dollars happily. And that will be fine, as it’s entirely up to you.

I was in the beta of Dungeon Runners since May of 2006. I saw it mature from a lifeless game without a sense of a direction, to a very humorous take on the hack and slash genre. But, even during all that time, I never really enjoyed playing the game. To this day, I still don’t. It doesn’t feel as responsive and/or as engaging as a Titan Quest or a Diablo or now… a Mythos.

Can I not have such an opinion?

When you’ve played Mythos yourself, which may be very soon as they’re upping invites if you feel like applying, then we can actually have a debate over which one we feel is better than the other, but even then, Mike… we’d still just be lobbying our preferences back and forth.

I like Mythos far more than I like Dungeon Runners. It plays smoother, the combat is far more interesting, and the skill trees are in my book a far better way to handle character advancement. What is it you want me to say exactly?

I’m wrong and you’re right, I should like DR more? Color me confused.

    JoBildo on 07 29th, 2007

  10. In this discussion, I’ve been mainly going by what is in the above video. I am guessing it is harder to say how it’s better as opposed to playing it and discovering for myself?

I was just hoping someone here may be able to detail to me features and functions that make Mythos better than DR. I was also curious as to what the free features were that made Mythos better than paid DR and what you got for being a paid member in Mythos.

I’ve applied to be in the Beta for Mythos and I’ll have to repost here once I have had a chance to play.

    Mike Arfken on 07 30th, 2007

  11. That’s it, Mike. I can’t tell you… mainly because the games are so similar, that it’s more of a preference of “feel” than it is features.

As for what you will get for paying, no one knows yet. In beta, we all have access to the storage chest and all sets of armor, etc. Who knows if that’ll be taken away or not?

From what we’ve been told though, you won’t be paying a monthly fee for Mythos. The payments will be micro-transactions for items that could be gotten by simply playing long enough as well, an easy way out of having to play a lot. I also believe they’ll be selling cosmetic things too. But according to Flagship, none of the paid things won’t be able to be had by free members. Free members will just have to work harder.

Unlike where in DR you have to pay to wear anything over Blue items, and to have stackable potions, and for storage, etc, and so on.

All of those will be included in Mythos for free, if what they are saying in a very limited sense is true.

When they’ve solidified the details of their payment options, I’m sure we’ll all hear about it.

Until then, going by gameplay experience, I simply like Mythos more. You can decide on which you prefer once you’ve played it too.
