Starforce and Copy Protection

There was a story on the front page of Digg.com alleging that Stardock, creators of Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords, supported anyone pirating their game. Recently, the controversial company that develops the Starforce copy protection technology posted a public torrent link in their forums to download Galactic Civilization 2: Dread Lords for free. They were effectively going against what their company is trying to accomplish — defeat game piracy.

Some say they did this to promote their product, some say they did it out of spite that Stardock is going against their philosophy, and so on. Stardock posted that they do not support piracy at all, and said the story on Digg is wrong.

Digg is reporting that a website is implying that we want Galactic Civilizations II to be pirated. Absolutely not! Of course we DO NOT want our game to be pirated. We’re a small company, every lost sale hurts us.

This only adds fuel to the fire for Starforce, which has developed a bad reputation for being too aggressive and causing problems with computers in which it steathily installs itself on when you install a game that uses their technology. There’s even a website called Boycott Starforce, which lists all the games that uses the copy protection.
