X3: Reunion Demo Released

The Egosoft website reports that an English playable demo for X3: Reunion has been released. Caution: those that are get queezy at the thought of Starforce on their systems should stay away since it’s noted on their site that it’s part of the demo. The demo weighs in at 905 mb’s and you can get it from Egosoft, 3dgamers, FileFront or Worthplaying.

  1. Wonder what the rationale is for including Starforce with demos. Is Starforce so ingrained into the game that they can’t exclude it from the demo? Does Starforce even work, or do crackers find a way around it right away when a game is out?

  2. Weird - I don’t understand the rationale in having Starforce on the demo either, considering there is no physical medium on which to verify against (which is how Starforce operates). I think that you’re probably right in that it’s so entwined into the coding that it’s more trouble than it’s worth to remove it.

With regards to whether it works or not, from what I’ve read Starforce on most games is eventually circumvented. The saving grace appears to be that it takes a while for this to happen in the majority of cases – Starforce games generally aren’t available as working downloads before they actually hit the shelves :)
I know a lot of people have issues with Starforce in that it does alienate a handful of genuine gamers who have problems running it on their systems. From my point of view though, it’s the industry protecting its business and in the long term that can only be a good thing.

  3. From what I was reading yesterday, it looks like the reason Starforce is in the demos is to prevent crackers from using the demo executable to crack the copy-protected full version. I wish there was some other way of them being able to protect their IP without using Starforce.
