The list was originally available in this month’s Computer Gaming Monthly magazine, but is now available online at 1UP, and it’s a great list. 101 games you can download, and play, free of charge. Some of them are fun for 5 minutes, while others are addictive time-wasters where you’ll find yourself plugging away at them for days. A few of my favorites:
- Mount & Blade
- Rumble Box
- Duck Doom Deluxe
- Gunroar Parsec47
According to a research report by Worcester Polytechnic Institute states that gamers are better the higher the framerates are. To most gamers, it states the rather blatant obvious, that higher framerates gives better tracking abilities, better aim, etc. Sluggish framerates can be frustrating, which is why us PC gamers do the upgrade dance at least once a year, especially when a huge blockbuster game is about to come out.
An interesting thing is that they state that higher resolutions doesn’t have an effect on your gaming skills, or experience. I wanted to disagree with that, but the more I thought about it, the more I agree. Think about it, have you ever installed an old game and still enjoyed it, even though it can’t run higher than 640×480?
Dave Perry resigned from Shiny Entertainment, the game development studio he founded, to find buyers when Atari decided to sell it off.
“Atari can go ahead and sell Shiny but I think I can help too because I’m on the board of a lot of things. I can bring a lot of parties to the table and I can do that faster if I hit the streets myself,” said Perry, who began hitting his contacts Friday and said there was “a lot of interest out there.”
“If I’m an employee of Atari, then I’d be stepping all over them. This way, I’m representing a buyer. I can act swiftly and get buyers on the table. I pitched Shiny last time and got $47 million.”
I respect Mr. Perry, I love his vision, drive, and passion. I only hope he gets Shiny back to where they were, without the movie license, and back to being creative and cranking out mind-blowing games. Sure, Messiah was bug-ridden but it was unique and fun. Earthworm Jim? Don’t get me started on the awesomeness; ditto on MDK and Sacrifice. Shiny is one of those game development studios that would be a shame to lose in the industry. It’d be right up there with losing Looking Glass Studios.
A new version of GridWars has been released today, now at version 3.7.
Firefly Studios and Take Two Interactive announces Stronghold Legend, the castle-building-then-protecting real-time strategy game. In previous installment of the series, you fought Arabians and men who resemble rats and wolves, but in Legends, you play either as King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, Count Vlad Dracul or relive the heroic sagas of the mighty Siegfried of Germany. No, Roy and lions aren’t in this version. Stronghold Legends is expected to be on store shelves this fall.
I’ve played the original Stronghold and its expansion to death, but really didn’t like Stronghold 2. I’m a bit apprehensive how Legends will turn out, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and hope it turns out to be addictive fun like the original was.

Rarely a game comes along that is insanely fun, simple, and free. So when one does come by, I’m on it like a redneck on a filet mignon smothered with a vermouth and mustard sauce. One such game I’ve discovered tonight and that has me in a giddy state of glee, is GridWars. It’s essentially a clone of the insanely popular minigame, GridWars: Retro Evolved, which is an Xbox 360 game called Project Gotham Racing 3.
It’s like the classic Atari game, Asteroids, but much more insane and addictive. It features blazing fast gameplay, trippy colors, and some sweet powerups. This game is best suited if you have a dual analog controller, like my Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2, which works excellent for this game.
